Abstract:
“In the world of the horror genre, environmental and background design serve as critical narrative components that are often overlooked but fundamentally essential in heightening the reader's experience. This paper explores the importance of environment design in horror comics through elements such as geography, architecture, environmental psychology, mark-making, and the construction of comic sequences. Environmental design not only shapes visual aesthetics but also plays a pivotal role in immersing readers in the narrative world, amplifying suspense, and evoking visceral emotional responses. By analyzing works of existing comics and manga specializing in this topic we understand its ability to establish chilling atmospheres and moods that deeply impact readers' emotions, enriching the overall horror experience.” –Abstract
