Abstract:
“This thesis collection examines the role of fashion and identity with a focus on empowering a woman’s inner strength through self-awareness. The Egyptian goddess/warrior identity is the gateway to a higher level of understanding in one’s internal power. Thus, the fashion garment functions as a weaving tool,
intertwining the threads of identity and power into a cohesive narrative. Virginia Woolf once said, ‘Vain trifles as they seem, clothes have, they say, more important offices than merely to keep us warm. They change our view of the world and the world’s view of us’ (Woolf 5). Fashion serves as a powerful means of self-expression, and the styles we choose can contribute to the narrative of our identity, allowing us to communicate aspects of our personality and aspirations without uttering a word. The objective for this collection is to provide women fashion options that go beyond function and aesthetic. The goddess/warrior identity offers design details that embody a story of triumph. ‘By imbuing powers of expression and beauty into the functional soft architecture that protects us, clothing becomes a signifier capable of generating or promoting happiness, health, and comfort’ (Cobb et al. 318). We will explore how the fashion garment can encourage identity formation and empower through self-awareness. This compilation utilizes the Egyptian goddess/warrior Isis and Egyptian iconography to construct design details that produce meaning and promote well-being.” –Abstract
