Abstract:

“The past and current armed conflict happening in Colombia has led to a significant number of cases of forced displacement, affecting mainly rural communities that have faced very limited governmental intervention and aid. This thesis proposes the design of the 'Welcoming Hope Center' located in one of the areas that most receives displaced communities in the city of Medellin, with the purpose of addressing the urgent needs of displaced individuals, offering a comprehensive solution for rebuilding their lives. As a comprehensive project, the center aims to provide essential resources for the displaced communities arriving to the city, such water, sanitation, health services, shelter, food, education, and psychological support. Similarly, it focuses on creating a sustainable living environment that fosters self-dependence and local development, to therefore achieve solutions that are durable through time and that bring opportunities, safety and hope for these communities. In terms of architectural design, the project seeks to integrate the model of integration of the city to address the social needs of the displaced, ensuring a conscious and comprehensive approach to their rehabilitation. Through the analysis and implementation of urban planning and the incorporation of innovative bamboo architectural typologies, the Welcoming Hope Center seeks to redefine how architecture can contribute in an effective way to resolving crises such as displacement, and provide a blueprint for future initiatives aimed at supporting internally displaced people in Colombia.” –Abstract
