Abstract:
“Some post-conflict cities never fully heal from their wounds. Residents grapple with a violent past that can be devoid of meaning. In trying to interpret the past and negotiate the present, the divisions that once defined these communities are still present today. Lacking a shared official narrative, artistic expressions offer post-conflict cities like Beirut, Belfast, and Sarajevo a way to communicate a painful and traumatic past. Artists' and designers’ public interventions become the voice of violent events and a divided present. The thesis focuses on a comparative study of three cities that were once divided. Ephemeral visual translations offer us a window into their divisions and unities. In particular, vernacular street graphics both reflect and shape territoriality and define identities to the internal and external gaze while reflecting underlying political, social, and historical tensions.” –Abstract
