Abstract:
"This thesis examines the perpetuation of patriarchal norms in Disney's adaptations of The Little Mermaid and explores alternative narratives that challenge these conventions. Through an analysis of the original tale by Hans Christian Andersen and Disney's animated and live-action remakes, the thesis scrutinizes themes of the father-daughter relationship, bodily transformation, and marriage. Drawing on feminist theories and critical perspectives, the thesis argues that Disney's adaptations reinforce traditional gender roles and limit the representation of alternative narratives, ultimately sending concerning messages about women's worth and agency. By juxtaposing Disney’s approach with Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, the thesis highlights the potential for alternative storytelling that celebrates diversity and empowerment." --Abstract
