Abstract:
“This thesis establishes the positive impact that tabletop role-playing games have on the mental and social well-being of those who participate by reviewing existing literature from players, creators, and mental health professionals, and by conducting first-hand interviews with individuals who play TRPGs. It also investigates several barriers that prevent new players from beginning a game. This paper explores the benefits of role-playing in a group setting, and identify the difficulties of starting a game. The visual component of this thesis addresses these barriers by writing and illustrating a murder-mystery module for the game Dungeons & Dragons™ that aids DMs in running a game, regardless of prior experience. By creating an illustrated game module, this thesis will put research into use by creating an engaging, easy access experience for new and experienced players alike.” –Abstract
