Abstract:

“Sharon Potter’s solo M.F.A. painting thesis exhibition, ‘WHEN ‘RESILIENT’ BECOMES A FOUR-LETTER WORD: Living with the Aftermath’, for Savannah College of Art and Design was held at the Apple Blossom Gallery in Martinsburg, West Virginia from February 14 – March 1, 2025. It delved into the world of Trauma Responses and their causes through low relief depictions under oil paintings accompanied by drawings of various dry media. After interviewing and/or researching individuals whose memories create nearly as much harm as the original events, Potter demonstrates in her paintings how the casual observer sees no hint of the turmoil creating havoc in the lives of people striving to regain a semblance of normalcy and happiness after having endured horrific experiences. Potter’s paintings invite audiences to look deeper, to observe the concealed consequences of past traumas. Her paintings show how the trauma has manifested itself in the life of each individual while the bas relief under the painting details the original trauma. The drawings alongside these paintings are symbolic pictures of where on the journey to a healthy, happy life each person is. Each story is unique, each trauma stems from a different place, and each struggle and subsequent path to living life is exclusive. Potter’s exhibition illuminates these aspects to educate, to demonstrate the importance of therapeutic programs; and, where appropriate, slam shut opportunities for perpetrators to strike.” –Abstract
