Abstract:
Abstraction, in its conceptual departure from traditional representation, grants
creative priority to the natural unfolding of materiality and form. Charmaine Ortiz’s
paintings use this unfolding dynamic to expose the essence of traditional subjects: the
still life and the landscape. In correlation with Ortiz’ visual work, this article clarifies her
intent by articulating the formal and theoretical basis of her painting practice. Influences
on Ortiz’s work, including Piet Mondrian’s theories on neoplasticity, Terry Winters’
biomorphic abstractions, and Agnes Martin’s spiritual painting processes, are examined
alongside the Duralar paintings, mono-prints, and time-based works of her thesis
exhibition, A Linear Perspective.
