Abstract:
Slow Food, an organization built on passion and opposition, exists as an alternative lifestyle with the
potential to affect large scale change socially, economically, and environmentally. The philosophy extends
into every facet of modern life—from the daily mundane, to family traditions, beliefs, attitudes, and culture.
It connects producers, and the land, to consumers, brings families and friends together, builds community,
emphasizes something over nothing, and provides individuals with the knowledge to demand a better
food system. This study focuses on capturing a comprehensive understanding of local food culture,
specifically in Savannah, Georgia, using a triple-bottom-line approach; and investigates how a small,
relatively new community of practice might grow and evolve to support a sustained and tangible
manifestation of the Slow Food philosophy that is deeply rooted in place.
