Formal abstract painting has long borne the unfavorable stigma of being too serious,
too spiritual, too cerebral, or just too “out-there” for reasonable audiences to comprehend, let
alone appreciate. But, what if contemporary abstract painting could alleviate some of the
seriousness of high modernism with its very own tools? Abstract painting can put to use the
old formalist notions of flatness, self-reflexivity, and genuine expression to create
approachable and sincere paintings capable of communicating humor, humility, or even
friendliness.
