Abstract:
The print designer needs techniques to help align their perspective (functionality and appearance) to users’ perspectives (visceral, behavioral, and reflective; useful, usable, and desirable) of the same product to strengthen project success. They also need techniques to assess and increase project quality. One such technique that aids with both needs is the application of usability. Usability focuses on making products that are effective, efficient, and satisfying to use for specific users in specific contexts (ISO 9241-11). Usability is achieved through focusing the design process on user needs, allowing users to influence and become part of the design process, defining requirements, specifying measurable attributes, and evaluating quality of use with actual users. Usability can guide a project’s functional success for specific audiences in specific contexts. The application of usability principles to print design provides user-centric evaluation methods to strengthen project success.
