Abstract:
"As an interdisciplinary practice that emerged in the 1980s, costume history and costume design have produced a considerable amount of literature, but the research has been dominated by discussions of costume appearance. Academics have not devoted much attention to the connection between historical costume and theatrical design, and how the two were combined to reflect the director's dramatic vision. Jean-Pierre Ponnelle (1932–1988), a creative director in the field of opera in the second half of the twentieth century, was particularly adept at designing costumes inspired by historical garbs. This thesis discusses his masterpiece opera film La Cenerentola (1981) and uses art historical methodology to demonstrate how Ponnelle channeled historical costume elements and his reading of opera to design costumes that achieved his artistic goals and principles as well as a strong message about feminism and morality. His aesthetics of design and perception of the gender and morality struggle have influenced generations of stage directors and designers in the production of opera." -- Abstract
