Abstract:
"Like those in so many other cities in the United States during the late nineteenth century, men in Savannah, Georgia, were provided with numerous opportunities to create community and socialize privately, away from women and among men of their own race, ethnicity, and even class. These opportunities were made possible by the establishment of men's-only organizations – used as an umbrella term in this research to encompass fraternal orders, militia companies, sports clubs, and private social clubs. Such organizations achieved their nationwide popularity during the Golden Age of Fraternalism in the late 1800s, which saw cultural shifts in the perception of gender roles and the ideas of masculinity and masculine socialization. This thesis will focus on the concentration of white, men's-only organizations in downtown Savannah, with the aim of illuminating how spatial proximity and shared space in the built environment facilitated social networking, acting to maintain and further the privilege white, male members had in greater society. Current scholarship neglects the men's-only organizations of Savannah and lacks a holistic view encompassing their prominence, intention, and – most importantly for this thesis – their impact on and interaction with the urban fabric. Insight into these various aspects of men's-only organizations provides valuable contributions to a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of gender roles and social, community-building networks within the built environment of Savannah from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth century." --Abstract
