Abstract:
|
"The Dance of Death (Danse Macabre or Danza Macabre) is a medieval and Renaissance invention born out of an obsession and desensitization to death, morbidity, and rampant social anxieties. The Dance of Death motif is found in poetry, images, and theatrical productions across continental Europe, originating back as far as the thirteenth century. While scholars have adequately investigated the origins and iconography of the Dance of Death, there has been little attention paid to it in Italy. The Dance of Death does not appear frequently in Italy despite it being a common motif in the rest of Northern Europe. Additionally, the few frescoes that do remain are found exclusively in Northern Italy. Looking at the sites of Clusone, Pinzolo, and Carisolo, this thesis serves to answer through contextual analysis why the Dance of Death only appears in Northern Italy and not the rest of the Italian peninsula." --Abstract
