Abstract:
"Museums are spaces that have acted as cultural centers for centuries. The ways that museums have existed in the past are beginning to shift as we as a society advance. They are not meant to remain stagnant and their core values change with time. Ever since museums have been around, new ideas follow. In the last thirty years, museums have been seeing monumental shifts in culture which the public demands to be translated to the museum and its spaces. Improvement does not exist without the desire to be better. In the mid-20th century, artists began to think more critically of the spaces that their art was being displayed in. Institutional critique arose by way of artists using their visual practice to question the ways in which museums functioned. While many of the artists who are known for aligning themselves with institutional critique, this essay is focused on the works of women who have been largely excluded from these spaces, which is a large critique of the museum world in itself. Carrie Mae Weems created works in which she turned into her alter ego and faced large museums which have excluded black female bodies. Louise Lawler examines the function of wall text in the museum space in relation to the viewers response based on said wall text. Renee Green challenges her viewers to think critically about historic house narratives and the idyllic stories that are told in place of the narratives of the enslaved. Today, we look at where institutional critique will stand in the future and mainly it will exist quite accessibly online platforms, giving a voice to everybody and creating a field of work where everybody is able to be heard and listened to." -- Abstract
